Hi BizzFed. I'm Jürgen. I got into IT in 1989 by writing software documentation, before I owned a computer. I never stopped writing. At LakeDrops, a small Drupal agency, I maintain ECA, a workflow engine on more than 25,000 websites. Since July 2025 almost all my working time has gone into open source. The community never got an invoice for that. In September it did. More on that later. So far I've only written for the Drupal crowd. Here I'm looking for people who have never installed Drupal and still ask the same questions. How do I automate work without chaining myself to a vendor? Which AI tools do I actually control? Why is it so difficult to escape Android and build a truly open smartphone operating system? On a PC, installing Linux is relatively straightforward. On a smartphone, it's a completely different story. Proprietary drivers, closed firmware, locked bootloaders, vendor restrictions and hardware dependencies make it incredibly difficult for independent developers to build alternatives. Android may be open source, but that doesn't mean the entire smartphone is open. Projects like GrapheneOS, /e/OS and postmarketOS are working to change that, but they face significant technical and hardware limitations. The Autistici/Inventati (A/I) server case (it was located in Amsterdam, seized by dutch authorities on request of US agencies) show that #DigitalSovereignty is not limited to running your software on machines in the EU. It actually is about real sovereignty. Why did the dutch authorities feel obliged to do this? The @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu should start a thorough review of the agreements with the US under that perspective, in my opinion. First effects:

And in so doing, it completely fails to address the main criticism of the "Passkeys are a trap" blog post, i.e. that passkeys are the boiling frog of BigTech control on authentication. https://nonfunctional.substack.com/p/passkeys-are-a-trap-do-not-use-them The only point I concede is that TOTP are vulnerable to phishing. And yet, if I really have to choose, I prefer that risk rather than handing over control to Google, Apple, and co. The server was hosted in a data center right next to our university building. Police digital experts are making an image of the drive, which goes straight to the US. A/I spent 25 years providing free web hosting and email to about 20,000 left-wing and anti-capitalist groups.
