Why is it so difficult to escape Android and build a truly open smartphone operating system? On a PC, installing Linux is relatively straightforward. On a smartphone, it's a completely different story. Proprietary drivers, closed firmware, locked bootloaders, vendor restrictions and hardware dependencies make it incredibly difficult for independent developers to build alternatives. Android may be open source, but that doesn't mean the entire smartphone is open. Projects like GrapheneOS, /e/OS and postmarketOS are working to change that, but they face significant technical and hardware limitations. Understanding these obstacles helps explain why we still have so few real alternatives to mainstream mobile operating systems. https://theprivacydad.com/why-is-it-so-difficult-to-build-an-alternative-operating-system-for-a-smartphone/ Should manufacturers be legally required to unlock bootloaders and document their firmware? #Android #Linux #GrapheneOS #OpenSource #DigitalSovereignty

Zapraszam do przejrzenia: https://eteryu.space #Prywatność #Cyberbezpieczeństwo #Android #GrapheneOS #Privacy

GrapheneOS version 2026100200 released, including the mmap performance fix kernel (Pixel): restore Android 17 (CP2A) mmap read-ahead behavior to resolve stuttering due to memory pressure caused by an upstream Pixel kernel change in Android 17 QPR1 If you had the performance problem from the previous update, this should fix it.

I just installed #GrapheneOS on a new (to me) phone, and man was that shockingly easy. I remembered it being easier than I was expecting the first time I did it (years ago), but either they made it even better or I forgot exactly how quick and simple it was. #android #privacy

VPN disconnecting when charging? Has anyone noticed the VPN disconnecting when charging the phone? Using IVPN, but I saw reports of Proton VPN too. Happens every time. The VPN app has all permissions and unrestricted battery use. I can’t enable “Always On VPN” because Android Auto needs the split bypass, and breaks if that is enabled.

When I don't have a laptop with me, I sometimes do server admin stuff using my smartphone. It's a reasonably secure phone because it runs a hardened Android distribution called #GrapheneOS. Or so I thought. Shoddy apps can of course violate your security and privacy on any operating system. As a matter of fact, I once set up a Mastodon server via SSH using my smartphone as a terminal. My terminal app of choice is @termux@fosstodon.org – it almost feels like Debian Gnu/Linux. Today I found out that the #Termux developers do not care about their users' privacy: They put Google's DNS resolvers as defaults into their app and do tell their users about it. Which means that until today, Google learnt about each hostname I resolved in Termux, although I had configured my smartphone to use a different DNS resolver. The Termux developers were alerted to this bug ten years ago by @rugk@chaos.social but chose not to do anything about it. Someone wrote a shell script to correct this. But it requires special permissions you can only grant via ADB. So I just used a text editor to replace Google's DNS resolvers with privacy-respecting ones gleaned from @kuketzblog@social.tchncs.de's recommendations in my first link: editor /data/data/com.termux/files/usr/etc/resolv.conf #TIL #dnsleak #terminal #android #app #privacy

You work in tech. You regularly have to input some form of MFA, whether passkey or a rolling code MFA from something like Google Authenticator or Authy. You work from home, and slack is the primary form of communication, with email becoming a distant secondary form. Time AFK (Away From Keyboard) is possible if you have your #smartphone, and you panic if it's not within reach. How do you go to a #dumbphone, in this scenario? I would like to ditch my smartphone, carry a camera on #bike trips, reduce my #addiction to the internet a bit, reduce the #surveillance of my activity a bit. My main concern is work requirements for communication and MFA. I am curious about things like #grapheneos, #fairphone, dumbphones. I have a Google #Pixel, an older model, and definitely don't want something newer that has more #AI integration, surveillance. Have you done this? How did it go? Please boost.
