Why is it so difficult to escape Android and build a truly open smartphone operating system?
On a PC, installing Linux is relatively straightforward. On a smartphone, it's a completely different story.
Proprietary drivers, closed firmware, locked bootloaders, vendor restrictions and hardware dependencies make it incredibly difficult for independent developers to build alternatives.
Android may be open source, but that doesn't mean the entire smartphone is open.
Projects like GrapheneOS, /e/OS and postmarketOS are working to change that, but they face significant technical and hardware limitations.
Understanding these obstacles helps explain why we still have so few real alternatives to mainstream mobile operating systems.

Should manufacturers be legally required to unlock bootloaders and document their firmware?

If I made a #weather app for #Android that consisted of only one screen saying "Just stick a finger out the window", it would probably be the most accurate weather app in existence.
And then all I have to do is jam in as many intrusive ads as I possibly can and I will never have to work a single day in my life ever again.

Hi, I'm Ioan, the developer of FlickerTalk, a private messenger for Android. No account and no phone number: you add someone with a QR code or a link. Your chat history stays on your phone, not on our servers. Texts, files, voice messages, voice and video calls, plus small tools and games inside the chat. The app and the server are open source under the AGPL-3.0.

A new epic adventure is about to begin. My quest is to have a privacy-respecting, and functional, mobile 'phone that can also make calls using VoLTE and WiFi calling. My travelling companion will be Sailfish OS. I'm not expecting it to be an easy journey.
My first step was getting a compatible 'phone. Here it is, my Sony Xperia 10 III. The Xperia is currently running Android 13. I'm going to revert it back to Android 11, as per the recommendation in the Sailfish docs.

Unfortunately, a further recommendation is to use the Sony flashing tool, Emma, to downgrade the Android version. Emma only runs on Windows. I don't have a Windows PC. So, I will either need to borrow a Windows PC, or try it with Virtualbox/Qemu.
I suspect borrowing a Windows PC might be the easiest route.

Jeez!
Looks like my epic journey may have foundered before it has even begun.
I've just found this page:
https://help.smarty.co.uk/en/articles/8985136-checking-if-your-device-is-4g-volte-compatible
So, even though my new 'phone is 5G compatible, and running a stock Android, Smarty (and likely parent company, Three) have decided NOT to support the Xperia.
Other carriers may have similar exclusion lists. You should check your own situation.
My decision now is whether to get yet another 'phone, or change network provider. I'm tending to the latter.

This journey has been one of discovery, but, not in the way I expected.
After buying two 'phones and a Windows laptop (for flashing 'phones using Windows apps) I've managed to get VoLTE working on my *original* 'phone, a Moto G7 Plus.
Much of the credit lies with EE, who haven't arbitrarily disabled swathes of 'phone models in the way Three/Smarty have done. I now have VoLTE working flawlessly in LineageOS 22.1.
Anyone want to buy two 'phones and a Windows laptop?

Changed my mind. I decided to install Sailfish on the Sony Xperia 10 III.
It was plain sailing. 😃
I guess, things only become difficult when things go wrong, and things went very smoothly.
In brief, I unlocked the bootloader, and downloaded Android 12 from Sony. I flashed that to the Xperia (11 wasn't available). I performed all the usual 'phone stuff, which worked. I then flashed the 'phone with Sailfish using fastboot.
The same things are still working.

A couple months ago I posted a clip of an app I made just for myself, and a bunch of you said “please release this.” So I did!
Cava Reader is an ebook + audiobook reader for Android. You load an EPUB and its audiobook, and it highlights each word as the narrator says it, karaoke style. The speech recognition runs on your phone, so it all works offline.
I made it because my brain wanders. When the words light up I never lose my place, and if I zone out for a second I just look back and the highlight is right there. (Same reason I always record my blog posts and post them next to the text. Friends with ADHD got me into that habit.)
also I made this video myself, and I’m way too proud of the little piano sync at the end lol
No account, no ads, your books never leave your device. There’s also a built-in library of 37 public domain classics you can read along with for free.
Reading and listening are free, read along on the classics is free, and read along on your own books is free for the first 4 hours. After that it’s a one-time $9.99 for the Full app. No subscription.
This is my first closed-source project and the first thing I’ve ever charged for. It’s the most effort I’ve ever put into anything, and it might be what finally stops me from dipping into my savings to keep Altbot running. If you do buy Full, thank you :)
Google Play, or APK / Obtainium: https://cavareader.app
Android only for now (sorry iOS folks, I don’t own a single Apple device to test on 😅 (for now… coming soon TM??))
