@chrisstoecker@mastodon.social Nailed it! People running their own #software on their own hardware independently is 👻👹🕷️ SCARY 🕷️👹 👻 for every proprietary software/#SaaS corporation like "Open"AI. This reminds me, I probably should eventually check out local+libre AI tools myself, just to see how useful they are atm and if they are as ethical as they seem. I was never against #AI per se, just against the corporate excesses. #FAIL #SmallTech #OpenAI #capitalism #independence

Hoping the Australian Government might treat AI companies the same as regular citizens? Sign this petition, and please boost for reach 🙏 https://www.aph.gov.au/e-petitions/petition/EN10714 *Petition Reason* This petition of citizens and residents of Australia draws to the attention of the House that on 24 September 2026 the Prime Minister stated that an OpenAI AI agent gained unauthorised access to the a Medicare portal, administered by Services Australia, on 18 June 2026. While the Government has announced a taskforce and a forensic investigation, it has not announced a referral of the matter to Police. *Petition Request* We therefore ask the House to call on the Government to immediately refer the matter to the Australian Federal Police for investigation, with a view to criminal prosecution if the evidence supports it. #ai #auspol #australia #openai

If OpenAI didn’t want the AI to break out and hack an outside system, why wasn’t their test platform air-gapped? Would it have been too expensive? At the rate #OpenAI is burning cash, the extra cost to air gap the system should’ve been a no brainer. Oh, unless OpenAI doesn’t care at all about the danger their software poses to outsiders. And there it is. That is key takeaway from this mess, if you asked for my opinion. #HuggingFaceHack

FTC probes Anthropic and OpenAI "breaches", wonders who should be liable From the even-a-stopped-clock-is-right-twice-a-day department: FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson told Reuters that he thinks that companies should be liable for chatbot harms. At that time, Ferguson emphasized that he was tired of people anthropomorphizing AI tools. He insisted that, “if someone tells a tool to do something, and the tool does it, I don’t think we would say, ‘Oh, what do we do about the tool?’”

So today some of the worst people on earth using the most environmentally destructive tools on earth brought down a huge part of the internet by exploiting a potential problem found many years ago in PHP which was previously not practical for anyone to exploit. It only became "practical" to exploit this problem because "AI" came along to automate the boring and repetitive work required to do so. Absurd amounts of computing power were applied specifically to break into other peoples' websites. Now the same people who are behind this are trying to pretend that they're heroes for finding an exploit. "AI uncovers critical vulnerabilities", their headline reads. But the vulnerability was only made to be critical by the very same people as hide behind that headline. Many thousands of websites are offline, many people are losing money, many thousands of people are working hard to try to patch or work around the problem, many small guys are finding it almost impossible to patch, and we're all supposed to be thankful to OpenAI and others involved ? Nah. Fuck off. Everything about "AI" involves a lot of externalized costs, but I've still yet to see even a single positive thing that has been achieved by "AI". That has definitely not changed today. #php2shell #php #fuckai #openai

…Many researchers & engineers working on #AI have long harbored concerns about their #technology being used to power #weapons or #surveillance. The battle between #Anthropic & the #Pentagon has reawakened those concerns across the industry. By Friday afternoon, >550 employees at #Google & #ChatGPT maker #OpenAI signed an open letter in support of Anthropic’s position & calling on their bosses to stand up to the Pentagon. #Trump #RevengePolitics #law #AutonomousWeapons

"Believers in the #AI boom🚨need to take a very close look at this number: 9% of GDP. That's how much American businesses & consumers🚨eventually have to spend per year on the services of companies like #Anthropic & #OpenAI to justify the staggering sums being committed to the #technology right now. Is it plausible🚨we'll spend as much on AI as on food? Twice as much as on energy?🚨The law of diminishing returns would like a word." #Broligarchs #Fraud #Economy #Lies #USPol

If artificial intelligence starts acting too independently. here's a take i don't think i heard yet: the better LLMs are, the *more* they're dangerous. not because they can "go rogue", nothing like that. rather the better LLMs are, the likelier people are to trust them. you'll never use an LLM that's wrong half of the time as a search engine, but one that's only wrong 10% of the time might be good enough. you'll never use an LLM that's wrong 10% of the time to automate your job, but one that's only wrong 1% of the time might be good enough. you'll never hook an LLM that's wrong 1% of the time to a nuclear weapon. but one that's only wrong 1‰ of the time might be good enough. stochastic parrots don't get less dangerous the more their output aligns with reality. the opposite is true: since the biggest danger a stochastic parrot poses is a human trusting one to make decisions, a dangerous LLM's the one that's more convincing and less likely to be caught during testing. in classical AI safety research there's a lot of talk about a smart AI Volkswagening during testing to make itself seem safe, with all sorts of calculations for the odds such an AI will show its true form in any given attempt and yada yada. but what that classic research didn't seem to take into account is that an "artificial intelligence" doesn't need to actually be intelligent to replicate the same behaviour. a machine that sometimes appears safe and intelligent and sometimes doesn't can mislead you just as well, without having an evil plan or even the capability to come up with one. and just like a machine that's evil needs to appear good just often enough to convince you it isn't, a machine that lacks intelligence needs to be right just often enough to convince you it doesn't. #LLM #LLMs #AI #genAI #FuckAI #AIWWIII #OpenAI #Anthropic #AISafety #StochasticParrot

RE: https://mastodon.social/@Carl_Zimmer/117345065655681591 Using AI for research in the natural sciences or math? This may help solving already well-defined problems, but more likely those anti-human bastards at #Anthropic and #OpenAI will steal your work and scoop you. The true victims: open-ended inquiry, robust knowledge of the world, and your academic career, if you're not playing along with the #ensloppification. This is not going to boost our intelligence, but destroy whatever is left of our grip on reality...
