My personal picks: LibreWolf for hardening out of the box, and Firefox with arkenfox if you want full control over every setting. Both are open source, independent from Google, and uBlock Origin works perfectly on them.

The beauty of #Mozilla coming out against regulating #Google because they depend on the money Google pays them is that we're only a few years away from them saying that we can't regulate #AI companies for the very same reason -
"The AI #LLM companies pay us, and wouldn't it be a pity if #firefox went away if you regulate them?"
Mozilla now seems to want to entrench the worst of the web, as long as they get a cut of the proceeds.

The test for any browser extension:
What problem does it solve?
How often do I actually face that problem?
What would I do without it?
If the answers are vague, remove it. Extensions that earn their keep: uBlock Origin (constant), Containers (daily), weather/world clocks (multiple times daily), password manager (every login).

RE: https://marius.blog/firefox-155-ai-kill-switch-retest/
Mozilla released Firefox 155 yesterday, so I took another look at its AI kill switch. The switch has grown since Firefox 148, but telemetry and advertising remain active. I retested it with Wireshark, and Mozilla’s internal reaction to my previous findings became part of the story too.

Firefox’s AI Switch Is Off. Telemetry Isn’t.
My Wireshark test of Firefox 148 showed that its AI kill switch disables generative features, but leaves telemetry and advertising untouched. Six months later, Mozilla’s CEO has called the switch perhaps the most important AI feature of all. I retested it in Firefox 155.

Here's a thread of cool things I found exploring the #Firefox Developer Tools!
First, a really convenient thing: You can "pop out" the Toolbox into a separate window!
To do this, open the Toolbox (using F12), click on the ellipsis menu on the right, and select "Separate Window".
I like this much better than the default "docked" modes, especially when using a scrolling window manager like #niri!

🦊 Firefox 158 released with JPEG XL support - OMG! Ubuntu
「 Firefox’s Smart Window, the AI-powered browsing mode that uses a cloud-based provider like OpenAI and Alibaba to help you browse, can now fill in form fields for you, by pulling relevant info from your other open tabs or your saved autofill data 」

Seize ownership. You fork, not to make another browser to compete, you fork to say "this is the source of truth now, out of Mozilla's hands". Fork #Firefox, call it NotFirefox (the name doesn't matter) and declare this as the place for volunteers to submit their MRs, all Firefox-based browsers commit to using that repo as their base. Take ownership of the community away from #Mozilla, make them have to do the merging and rebasing work for their AI shitbrowser.

Firefox 153 has been released!
This is the last monthly release before the release schedule speeds up. It enables container tabs for all, QR code link sharing and – at long last – nicely rounded bottom window corners on GTK desktops.

I hope I don't get in trouble for sharing this publicly, but I managed to get my hands on the detailed design docs that everyone is using for their big UI redesigns of late.

I mainly use Mastodon but I am also on #BlueSky to follow & interact with people who are not here. Having said that, I am pissed that due to the #UK government age verification laws I have to prove my ID/age via a 3rd party company to use the site for direct messaging. Thank you but no.
I could use a VPN to get around this but I found more elegant solutions on github. Adding the suggested script into UBlock Origin on #Firefox worked a treat. #privacy

No, #Firefox, I did not need fucking *rounded corners* on my tabs. What a stupid fucking waste of effort when you could have been making a better browser.
I have 3 apps with support for spellcheck on my new install of Linux with Gnome:
Zen (Firefox), Gnome Text Editor and LibreOffice.
They have three different amounts of dictionaries I can choose from: 19, 0 and 1.
Because of this I have to assume that they all download their own dictionaries. If I add a new word to the dictionary in one app it will not work in any other app.
This is annoying! Would love to see work on shared dictionaries across all apps!
