@nixCraft@mastodon.social Really? So that's why the link demands I enable Javascript...and still doesn't let me view the page? I am disappoint, #debian.

As I predicted in https://ploum.net/2026-10-01-pascal_wager.html , not taking a strong stance against the use of LLM in your project is exactly the same as taking a strong "use LLM everywhere" stance. There’s no middle ground. #Debian :debian: is demonstrating this more quickly that I even envisioned by now forcing packagers that upload to NEW to receive an LLM feedback about their work. https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2026/10/msg00263.html?pow_referer= You can still "opt-out" but for how long? All of this is so predictable and preventable…

RE: https://floss.social/@josch/117507580019985725 The collapse of the #Debian project is going faster than I thought it would. I was disappointed and horrified by the earlier vote to allow LLM use, but even then, I had no idea it was going to get this bad this quickly. Forcing all package maintainers to jump through an LLM hoop to upload their packages is scary reminiscent of companies forcing job applicants to jump through LLM hoops to keep their job applications from being ignored. At this rate Debian will soon be gone. @paelnever@masto.es #Linux

For now, I will no longer be uploading to the #Debian NEW queue. And yes, I will now go outside and do something nice instead of trying to argue on mailing lists about #LLM use in #FOSS. Maybe do the same. The weather is great outside. :) https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2026/10/msg00263.html

@bytebro@mastodonapp.uk#UKLaw and #EULaw have not followed in the footsteps of the U.S.A.. The two legal approaches (3, in fact, as Japan has another one) are divergent, and the U.K. and E.U. are already on another legal path where the fundamentals differ. They already have laws. In fact, their laws came first. The relevant U.K. law was passed when Rishi Sunak was Prime Minister, for historical context. The E.U.'s was the year before that. The fundamentals are things like exactly who is being legally required to verify, record, provide, and act upon information about people's ages. U.S.A. laws put these onuses on different classes of people than do U.K. and E.U. laws. Japan is different again. One 'fun' part is that the U.S.A. laws differ on this from state to state, but #Debian Developers (and their counterparts in other Linux-based operating systems) always match the definitions regardless. Because they are both operating system and app store providers. #AgeVerification #USLaw

I've loved #Debian for years. Decades, really. The main reason for that is it's always seemed, to me, to be the best place to actually control and own your own computer. That trust is gone for me. We can talk responsible, not responsible, whatever. The fact is, LLMs are trained on the hard work of billions of people, and put into a blender and sold back to us. It's more separation of workers from the fruit of their labors, to the profit of capitalists. That's not even getting into the environmental impacts, the bias in it, etc. And especially not getting into the horrible, HORRIBLE people in charge of it all. I do not want that on my laptop, folks. I just don't.

Selfhosting as a Linux newbie - Ubuntu Server LTS or Debian 13? I use Debian as my daily driver, but I’m still a newbie. I would like to selfhost a few apps, initially on a VPS, but I will probably move to a local PC once I diagnose what is broken with my old computer. The guides at https://selfhosting.sh/ always recommend Ubuntu Server LTS for newbies, but Ubuntu seems to have bad PR and I already run Debian on my home PC. On one hand, I am a newbie and I guess Ubuntu might be easier to set up and maintain. Though, I don’t HOW exactly? On the other hand, if I have Debian on my home PC and on my server, they are the same system, so I’d be learning the same system at two places and with two usage scenarios. But it might be easier to make mistakes on Debian..? What is your opinion/recommendation? EDIT: thank you everyone! My gut feeling was Debian and your responses were overwhelmingly in favor of Debian, so Debian it is :)
