#linux #bazzite

Early preview ("works on my machine(s)") of #Bazinga - CLI and web app to allow families to make remote play from their Bazzite (and SteamOS?) easier. Allows for account switching, pairing and wake-on-lan so that you don't need to go and wake/login to your Bazzite box when you want to start up a remote play session. https://git.sync.wtf/troed/bazinga #Steam #Bazzite #SteamMachine

I've ended up with #Bazzite #Gnome, modern #AMD and it works great. 2GB VRAM allocated on #iGPU with latest BIOS update (set to auto). Until I bring in more DDR4 and a dGPU SFF, this will do. O is extremely happy, game controller from #Stadia has a new life, a second hand monitor for 20€ and wired network. It boots into #SteamOS, desktop mode Gnome is available for homework. #Windows is so last decade. Current gen will game on #Linux. Work on Linux. And #Microsoft will try to enforce Windows for corporate, sweeten the #Azure licenses to have IT migrate to self-hosted Linux servers.

In comes @madthumbs@lemmy.world with the #SecurityThroughObscurity argument that the #SiliconValley barons have been promoting for decades now. But what he's suggesting isn't actually wrong. You should use a #Linux distro that is properly preconfigured and vetted by a community. This is why #Arch or #NixOS shouldn't be your first recommendation for newcomers. In fact, if we are to go by high security standards, your first distro should be an immutable one like #Bazzite or #Silverblue.

With all the conversation about how #Valve effectively put #Linux on the map for a lot of people, and how projects like #KDE and #Ubuntu had been working for decades to make it more viable for the average person, I keep feeling like Ubuntu and RedHat walked so that #Mint and #SteamOS could run, and SteamOS ran so that #Cachy and #Bazzite could fly. And I've gotta say, Cachy with KDE is the best Linux experience I've ever had, better than any #Windows experience I've ever had, and I really do think that all of this community effort has really paid off, especially now that developers and hardware manufacturers no longer assume that you are on Windows and not Linux.

It's long since overdue that I post an introductory post, especially given life changes and the like. I'm Oro. Or Dallas. Or Yves. I use Dallas for most purposes, or Yves with friends; all are correct. I (don't) like to program. When I'm not screaming at my laptop, I'm doing schoolwork (currently working on an AAS in Computer #Programming), or other (modern?) housewife shenanigans, or working on cars and my truck. I like to use and contribute to the #GNOME ecosystem, which includes some custom pointer acceleration patches (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/4296 and https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gsettings-desktop-schemas/-/merge_requests/99) and testing and debugging for whatever problems I come across. Lately, I've also expanded to container native systems, and it gives me more of an insight on the systems I use daily such as #Bazzite and #Fedora Silverblue, and I've been #Linux-only for years now. There's more, but that just about covers the big stuff. I'll post more in a reply. I also fiddle with #Wayland, #Rust, and other stuff #FreeDesktop, #Flatpak, and #FOSS.

Universal Blue/Bazzite/Silverblue/other immutable Linux friends: (why) should I be using Homebrew? I contribute to a handful of web projects that use npm, ruby, and probably other package managers. I’ve not really had a problem lately installing things the way those projects say to for Linux, but I keep hearing about people using Homebrew on Linux. When needed, I can also spin up a toolbx container and work in there. Am I missing something? #Linux #Homebrew #Bazzite #uBlue #Fedora #Silverblue
