Little known fact: #ThinkPads are actually related to jellyfish and share a similar lifecycle. ThinkPad eggs hatch in the corporate environment and enter their floating, planula larval phase. During this time they're sexless, and helpless, running a rudimentary operating system called #Windows. They're at the mercy of the corporate tide, feeding off of primitive spreadsheets and Java. Many won't survive this experience, but those that do, eventually drift down to the refurbishment plane. 1/3

Heya! I'm Rafe (pronounced "Rayf") and it's been a minute since I posted an updated #introduction so here we go! First off, I'm here to chill and have a good time. There are enough bad vibes in the real world so don't be bringing that. Okay, now that we're past that… Happily married since 2009, proud #dad since 2010, and #IT helpdude since 2018. My #tech preferences lean toward #Apple - my daily drivers are an #iPhone 15 Plus and a #MacBook Air (M3) - but I also run #Windows 11 Pro and #Linux Mint at home. You won't find me taking sides on any "this tech vs that tech" arguments. Aside from tech stuff, I post a lot (probably more) about #Daggerheart, #DnD, and other #TTRPG systems, as well as #music, especially weird niche #metal - my current favorite bands are #BeastInBlack, #Blackbriar, and #Gloryhammer. Then there are the random thoughts and occasional shitposts… Also, I dabble in #photography, #painting, and #writing! Links for where I post that stuff are in my profile. Let's be friends! #intro

For a long time we have made our selves gradually more and more dependent on Big Tech. This applies when it comes to operating system, to browsers, to various services, to storage and now when it comes to AI.

More and more are realizing this was and is wrong.

You can take the first steps to be independent as a person or company. Obviously, given that you are here, you have already taken some steps. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Switch browser... to Vivaldi. :)
  2. Switch desktop OS. Personally I have switched to Linux. Currently running Kubuntu, Ubuntu and Zorin on different computers.
  3. Switch mail service. Proton and Fastmail are good services, but there are others. Choose one that allows use of a mail client.
  4. Switch calendar service. Most mail services also offer a calendar service.
  5. Switch office package. Personally I use LibreOffice.
  6. Switch Web conferencing software. Personally I use Whereby.
  7. Switch search. Startpage, Ecosia, Qwant and DDG are great alternatives.

There are a lot of other great choices. The point is to start taking those steps away from Big Tech and Silicon Valley.

Day 285 #365project Aled has given me whatever bug he had so I didn't get out much today. Managed to go out for a few minutes at dusk and this is the best I got today. Now for tea with honey and some rest. ☕ #Cymru #Wales #NorthWales #Porthmadog #stonecottage #cottagecore #moody #twilight #bluehour #welshcottage #charming #rustic #autumn #autumnal #autumncolours #fallfoliage #autumnvibes #fallvibes #window #Fenster #windows #fensterfreitag #atmospheric #photography #Fotografie #amateurphotography

Windows gets a new Run dialog With Windows being as old and long-running as it is, there's a ton of old and outdated bits and pieces lurking in every nook and cranny. I have always found these old relics fascinating, especially now that over the past few years, Microsoft has attempted to replace some of those bits and pieces with modern replacements (not always to great success, but that's another story). https://www.osnews.com/story/144883/windows-gets-a-new-run-dialog/ #Windows

#Microsoft fake #Windows error ended in a $280 million settlement. The story mostly forgotten today, and one of the reasons why MS was/is so disliked. This is just one of their dirty tricks they played to gain mass adoption and eventually a monopoly on the PC. https://www.makeuseof.com/microsofts-windows-fake-error-ended-in-a-280-million-settlement/ #technology #history
