Whilst looking at possibly purchasing a ThinkPad T480 I thought I'd play around with the #NetBSD live image on my #Thinkpad P14s gen 1 AMD. So far I can boot Xorg and the touchpad works even two finger scrolling. Obviously the AX200 WiFi doesn't but I'll dig out my USB WiFi dongle as it'll work albeit not full n speeds but upto 54. Suspend doesn't seem to work as yet and I've still to test the onboard audio too. But hey it works. Oh I did notice on the Ethernet it's speed is halved as under FreeBSD I can pull around 900/100 where on NetBSD I get 350/100. But I got the same results on another machine a Dell Optiplex 3080 so it must be a NetBSD Ethernet issue??

Tried the #NetBSD live amd64 image on my #ThinkPad amd ryzen 7 Gen 1 P14s and it booted OK. plugged in my Focuserite Scarlett 2i2 dac and it instantly froze. Also it does not boot with it connected although FreeBSD does panicked at the xhci audio section. So I'll continue tinkering to see what does and does not work on this laptop under NetBSD.

My old ThinkPad T480 is back in daily use, running FreeBSD 15.1. Xfce, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, hardware video decoding in Firefox and Chromium (checked in the decoder, not just a capabilities page), a webcam that survived a 45-minute Zoom call, a Bluetooth speaker via virtual_oss, and SSH and Git signing from a smart card. Boring Teams’ meeting happening so let’s play cool kid. #NetBSD 11.0 on the #ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 AMD. Unfortunately, this fairly recent machine seems to not be well supported: no DRM (1024x768 in vesa mode), no WiFi, no Touchpad, no suspend/resume (needs the S0ix thing). @joel@gts.tumfatig.net That's the same problem that @jaypatelani@bsd.network was having with #NetBSD and a #Thinkpad. The full dmesg shows the NetBSD problem that wasn't in the screenshot: ihidev0 at iic1 addr 0x2c: vendor 0x6cb product 0xce67, TPD0 ihidev0: 14 report ids acpi_gpio_get_int: translate failed: AE_NO_HANDLER ihidev0: autoconfiguration error: can't find gpioint resource Vendor 06cb is Synaptic. That and the Elan are idiosyncratic PS/2 keyboards and mice, on machines with 9 USB root hubs, that also talk a special extension of the PS/2 protocol in order to be touchpads, and that *also* talk over I2C. Maybe pressure the @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org to fund a developer to look into #NetBSD's I2C and PS/2 drivers and make it recognize and handle these oddball old PS/2 things that #Lenovo decides to use in machines with 9 USB hubs. here's another #permacomputing salvage - a Lenovo #Thinkpad T490 rocking #Fedora #Linux. I got it with a "dead" screen, so even before it got to me started looking for cheap 14" FHD panels. after I got it and started testing with an external display, noticed during a restart that the screen showed eversoslight activity so grabbed my phone and shone light at it and... yepp, that's a flawless image, albeit without backlight. 1/

Mein #Lenovo #Thinkpad #T590 fährt korrekt hoch, Display bleibt dunkel (mit Taschenlampe sieht man schwach den Anmeldebildschirm). Da ist offenbar Sicherung des Backlights gestorben, vermutlich durch defektes Displaykabel im Scharnier. Da ich weder Equipment / Erfahrung / Ehrgeiz im SMD-Löten habe - gibt es in #Karlsruhe einen seriösen Laden, der solche #Reparatur​en (Sicherung- und Kabeltausch) zu realistischen Preisen macht? Really getting into #linux recently, daily driving #CachyOS and runnning #Debian and #AntiX on some older laptops too. Music is important to me, lots of #90s stuff like #grunge #indie #britpop #triphop and also current artists like #MagdalenaBay #AmylandtheSniffers and #CowboyHunters . I believe that this is ife and there's nowt after it so might as well get on with everyone and the big roundie under my feet.

Es ist ein Dual-Core i5 mit 6 GB RAM, der vorher unter Windows 8.1 fast unbenutzbar war. My setup for recording game play tonight: 42" LG C2 OLED TVMSI Claw 8 AI+IVANKY Dock (the Claw is sitting on it) with HDMI out to external capture card, USB for mouse and controller.Ugreen external USB-C video capture card that can do up to 4K at 144hz. Almost zero lag loopback for video to my TV. It's hidden behind the Claw.Lenovo ThinkPad 14s gen 5 running Fedora Linux 44 (Silverblue) with OBS Studio to record game play.El cheapo TMKB M1 mouse. It might be cheap ($29), but it is pretty awesome and performs just as good as the $80+ name brand mice (looking at you Logitech, why are your mice so expensive?)Gamesir Cyclone 2 controller with TMR sticks.Old Microsoft Designer keyboard. It's old, but it's super compact and thin. Still no good news with the freshly out #NetBSD 11.0 RELEASE. S3 suspend woke up with dead WiFi (Intel 8265, iwm driver), in addition to keyboard and touchpad as before on my #ThinkPad T470s. So basically dead machine and no way to reset unless long press power button for a hard reboot. Desktop usability needs more love. #runBSD #BSD #Unix #AskFedi
