Gestern beim Netzpolitischen Abend in Wien gab es einen Vortrag über die Umstellung vom Bundesheer auf @libreoffice@fosstodon.org. Ich hab gefragt, wie das finanziell ausschaut. Trotz, dass sie 7-8 Leute dafür beschäftigen, und für die initiale Umstellung auch Geld in die Hand nehmen mussten, haben sie jetzt schon gespart und die nächsten Jahre wird das nur noch mehr werden. Also erzählt das gerne weiter! Wenn ihr Leute nicht mit Unabhängigkeit als Argument erreichen könnt, dann vielleicht damit. Außerdem fließen die Verbesserungen, die sie machen, wieder in das Community-Projekt zurück, wirklich sehr toll! #SoftwareFreedom #FOSS #FLOSS #LibreOffice #DigitaleAutonomie #DigitaleSouveränität #NetzPAT #Bundesheer #Österreich #Verwaltung

After a long, long time of having trusted my data (email, photos, calendar, etc.) to Google, I'm interested in extracting myself in a safe and practical way from that ecosystem and using more free software, but I'm concerned about losing things if I don't do it right. The EU 🇪🇺 spends ~€264 billion a year on IT, mostly proprietary, cementing exactly the vendor lock-in and dependencies. Its Tech Sovereignty Package positions #FreeSoftware a "first" principle for the upcoming Cloud and AI Development Act #CADA. Now it needs to be binding, not just a suggestion. Is it also making you upset 😡 that the majority of laptops 💻 are only sold with a specific proprietary operating system: Microsoft Windows. So as user, you must pay for it 💲, even if you do not want to use this OS. This is unfair and we want to change it! Consumers should be able to buy laptops without any specific OS, and should not have to pay the license price if they don't want to. DivX și Xvid sunt acum complet libere la nivel mondial O eră importantă din istoria codecurilor video se încheie oficial: ultimul brevet care proteja standardul MPEG-4 Part 2 (cunoscut pentru formatele populare DivX și Xvid din anii 2000) a expirat. 💡 Ce înseamnă acest lucru? 🔓 Fără redevențe sau licențiere: Producătorii de hardware, dezvoltatorii de aplicații comerciale, proiectele multimedia și distribuțiile Linux pot include acum suport nativ de codare/decodare MPEG-4 Part 2 fără teama de taxe sau procese legate de brevete. 🐧 Ideal pentru distribuțiile Linux: Distribuțiile cu politici extrem de stricte privind software-ul brevetat vor putea include suport de bază pentru aceste formate fără a mai necesita repozitoare terțe. 🔍 Clarificare importantă: • Expirarea se aplică MPEG-4 Part 2 (fisierele vechi .avi, DivX, Xvid). • NU se aplică formatului H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10) sau altor tehnologii moderne utilizate în fișierele .mp4 actuale, care sunt încă protejate de brevete active. 😲 … 👀 at this essay from @jcolag@mastodon.social. John is doing something I really think that makes #FOSS great: exploring incomplete philosophical, political, and/or policy questions in public. Strive to be comfortable with the stream of consciousness ramble and consider the ideas that John is exploring: There are real insights about how errors in #SoftwareFreedom leadership left the #FreeCulture movement w/out its natural allies. Fascinating! I look forward to next installment.
