Oh, the government is going to have a "social media campaign" to encourage people to get their flu vaccine. That's nice. Though I can't help thinking that making flu vaccine free on the NHS for people under 65 would be more effective. Oh, and is flu the only vaccine that will protect against respiratory infection this winter? I can't help thinking there's another one that maybe they could have mentioned. #Covid19 https://www.gov.uk/government/news/social-media-campaign-urges-brits-to-get-vaccinated-for-winter #Flu #Influenza

WAHOO! I got my #Covid and #flu shots today at my doctor's office. I guess I should be grateful they had Pfizer because Moderna's higher mRNA dose always hits me like a bus. In any case, glad I got that out of the way. They know from my records I don't have any underlying issues that make me high risk for hospitalization or death from Covid. They also know the current US "guidelines" are bullshit so they didn't even question it, just gave me the shots. 😂 👏🏼 #CovidIsNotOver

PSA for Western WA people: the Visiting Nurses are back giving COVID and flu shots - specifically at Seattle Public Schools between September 25th and November 22nd, but also in Bothell, Edmonds, Kirkland, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Redmond, Renton, and Sammamish too. They take insurance, but if you don't have it: out of pocket costs are $60 for a flu shot and $200 for a Moderna COVID shot. Lots of appointments available. https://www.seattlevna.com #seattle #health #flu #covid #vaccinations

A small Australian 2026 #flu update. 11JULY2026 🦠It is a 'normal' pre-peak-pandemic start to the 2026 season. That is a really nice change from several past years. In the ~15 days since my last update (26JUN), detections have risen by 9,002. That's a daily rate of 600, up from 549.

Expanded version of the last graph, both in the number of years & in its horizontal stretching. #AusFlu2026 started to rise in June, similar to pre-pandemic patterns of a #flu rise that peaks around August. But let's wait and see about peaks.

"The cause of death for an Air Force trainee who died last month at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio was influenza, according to Rep. Joaquin Castro, a Texas Democrat. Keon Talik McDaniel, 25, died June 16, according to his obituary. Influenza swept the air force base in June, one month after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made the flu shots voluntary, rather than mandatory, for American troops." https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/influenza-vaccines/air-force-trainee-san-antonio-texas-died-flu #PublicHealth #flu #influenza #vaccines #immunizations #USpol

"A trove of newly released internal emails offers a new look at how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention navigated some of the most controversial public health decisions of President Trump's second term — and, at times, chafed at pressure from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Motivated by the devastation the Spanish flu inflicted on WW1 troops, the US military was key in the development of #flu vaccine. Keeping troops battle ready is critical, which makes Hegseth's decision to drop mandatory flu shots ill-advised, Paul Friedrichs writes.

Of what #flu is around, most viruses are A(H3N2) with some Bs and a little A(H1N1). A reminder that last year started with A(H1N1) dominating and finished with A(H3N2) subclade K wrapping up 2025 and driving a big & unusual summer surge into this year. Not so long ago! There should be heaps of immunity

Australian #flu numbers over time. I've added the main 1 (or 2) dominant A or B subtypes to highlight their exchange over time. It's a busy figure. We've had 2-of-each-A-subtype-dominated years since #InfectionPause, with 2025 having both dominate at different times.

@paul@oldfriends.live @maddad@mastodon.world A tiny caveat: "Died of disease" encompasses more than just the #flu. But the point is still valid. 👍
