Hi Mastodon! 👋 We're Oyanu, a small team building a free travel-safety app for backpackers. Quick tip: before you land in a new country, save the local emergency number offline. In Thailand, the tourist police number is 1155. Across the EU, it's 112. That way you have it even without signal. Here we'll share scam alerts, SOS info and practical safety tips for the road. https://oyanu.com #introduction #travel #backpacking #solotravel

I can't believe that the Canadian government shut down the weather radio service. How is anyone supposed to get weather updates outside of a city now? This was an essential service and they just turned it off and told people to use an app, when there is no public telecom operator, and the vast majority of the country doesn't have internet cell service. Absolutely ridiculous. Radios were perfect for this use case. Now you need a sat phone subscription?? #canada #hiking #backpacking

Does anyone know what these items are? From a box of overstock camping supplies. Thanks in advance! #askFedi #camping #backpacking

Thought I had our 3 week #trekking trip to the Central Pyrenees in June all sketched out. Then I came across "Le Chemin de Liberté" (Freedom trail) that escapees and evaders used in WW2 to escape south over the mountains from France into Spain. I read up on some of the fascinating stories involved. Le Chemin de la Liberte is one hardest of many escape routes. This particular route is about 60km with 3500m ascent/descent. Must say, I'm very tempted. #backpacking #spain #hiking

Question for #backpacking folks who organize group trips: how do you currently handle gear coordination? Spreadsheet? Group chat chaos? Just hope nobody forgets the water filter? I'm building a tool to solve this and want to know what people actually do today before I assume my approach is right. #hiking #thruhike #ultralight

Lovely video. A young woman with her lovely dog Otto walk along the entirety of Britain, from northernmost Scotland to southernmost Cornwall and England. Wild camping about a hundred nights. (I do wonder, though. Wild camping, without landowner permission, is not permitted in England and Wales. (It is in Scotland.) How much "white privilege" is involved here, when it apparently is tolerated in practice? Did annoying people who noticed her think "oh it's just a single young white woman, I won't bother getting upset". I suspect a pair of brown young men behaving otherwise identically would have a harder time?)
