GEnie (the General Electric Network for Information Exchange) was founded in 1985 as a dial-up online service that connected users through email, forums, games, and downloads, building a devoted community while competing with CompuServe and AOL. 💿🌐 In 1996, new owners attempted to reinvent the magic 🧞 for the web era. But the service struggled to keep pace & went up in smoke by Y2K. Take a trip through web history with #WaybackMachine ➡️ https://web.archive.org #DialUpEra #InternetHistory

As part of my ongoing history project, I am checking hardcopy documents I have against online archives to try to notice when things I'm forced by circumstance to get rid of are available from some other source. I noticed web pointers to something called the Lagout Museum [1], which was a web site that had a lot of old computer documents, but in particular some Symbolics lisp machine documents. It's gone now, so I was getting 404s. But I found it on the Internet Archive's amazing Wayback Machine [2]. Sadly, it's a pain to browse because the historical artifacts [3] contain code that pops up a prompt for donations. So, always up to a challenge, I used my netsettlement git(hub) repo to host a browsable mirror of the directory structure (not the actual files) that does not have the pop-up menu problem. It's better explained in the README.md at https://github.com/netsettler/netsettlement/blob/main/symbolics/lagout_museum/ for more details. @internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org Thank you. As a #whistleblower , hounded by the powers-that-be, I have found the #WaybackMachine very useful, for retrieving my subversive writings from the past, some of which have ceased to exist where I hosted them. Is there a way I can publish an article on my blog, and then immediately request for the content to be crawled, and a snapshot to be archived?

"Smile!" Summer vacation used to mean film cameras, limited shots, and the long wait to see how the pix actually turned out. 📸☀️ #Kodak helped define photography, building systems that made memories printable, shareable, and permanent. With digital photography, Kodak slipped from public prominence. But today, film cameras are making a quiet comeback. “Smile!” hits different when every shot counts. Today on International Archives Day, we recognize how institutions like the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) safeguard the nation’s documentary history, ensuring accountability, preserving memory, and maintaining access to records across generations. Just as the NARA preserves a nation’s record, the Wayback Machine preserves the history of its web presence. 🕰️ 💾 Explore decades of #webhistory with the #WaybackMachine: https://web.archive.org #InternationalArchivesDay

RIP Ask Jeeves. The natural-language search engine founded in 1996 was rebranded as Ask in 2006, and officially shut down on May 1. Here are the Wayback Machine’s first and last captures of the site. When websites disappear, the historical record can disappear with them. The #WaybackMachine preserves that history – capturing the web so its past remains accessible.
