Marsh sun orchid (Thelymitra longiloba) in Croajingolong NP, East Gippsland, VIC. This plant has slightly wider petals and sepals than more typical 'star-like' flowering forms. Only found the one still out at this location where it can be easy to miss this species when they flower amongst a range of similar blue sun orchids. #Orchids #OzPlants #Biodiversity #Ecology #Botany #Photography #Spring #InTheField #Nature #BloomScrolling #EastGippsland #SunOrchids #Thelymitra

A teaspoon of tan powder, warm water, a fork, thirty seconds of whisking — and it goes silky, the way bark must feel to the tree in a long rain. Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra). The inner bark's mucilage, long chains of sugars like galactose and rhamnose, swells and coats a raw throat or a sour stomach. The FDA allows it in lozenges. Beyond that, the human evidence is thin and mostly traditional. Take it two hours apart from any medicine, since it can slow absorption. Skip it in pregnancy. Buy cultivated bark. It has no Gaelic name of its own. Leamhan is the Highland elm, its cousin across the water. What do you reach for when your throat goes raw? Prairie is among the most destroyed habitats on this continent, and this is one of its markers. Everything you can see of it is built to be burned off. The taproot goes fifteen feet down into ground nobody has broken since before there was a state there. Some live close to a century. What's the one you'd put in the ground knowing you won't see it finished? #BloomScrolling #GardensOfMastodon #wildflowerhour #NativePlants #Prairie #Gardening #Herbalism #Druid #Folklore #Botany #Solarpunk 2/3

Grevillea macleayana flowering in coastal heathland near Ulladulla, NSW. These coastal plants (sometimes referred to as the 'Racecourse Creek' form) with mostly entire, elliptic leaves and a semi-prostrate habit when young offer a lot as garden plants but I'm not sure when I last saw one available in a nursery or native plant sale. G. macleayana was elevated to a species (from G. barklyana ssp. macleayana) in 1994. In 2022 two more species were separated from G. macleayana - G. gilmourii (previously known as the Deua form') and G. milleriana (from one plant!) Unfortunately the only Grevillea I regularly see for sale along the south coast from this set of species is a 'Grevillea barklyana' which is actually a hybrid with finely toothed leaves. If I ever track down a stock plant of the coastal Racecourse Creek form I'm going to try a few cuttings - can think of several coastal gardens I work on that these would look great in! #Grevilleas #Proteaceae #OzPlants #Biodiversity #Ecology #Botany #Photography #Spring #InTheField #Bloomscrolling

Caladenia hillmanii (purple-heart fingers) in open forest at Jervis Bay, NSW. Some variation in flower size, shape and colour at this location with some plants not having the distinctive maroon labellum side-lobes this species is known for. Generally regarded as a coastal species growing at altitudes of 0-200m but I've seen almost identical variations on a population of Caladenias in Monga NP at 700m altitude. #Orchids #OzPlants #Biodiversity #Ecology #Botany #Photography #Spring #InTheField #JervisBay #Caladenia #BloomScrolling #WildFlowers

Two handfuls of lemon balm, bruised between your palms until the room smells like lemon and cut grass. Just-off-boil water, ten minutes, lid on. The lid is not a suggestion — the whole medicine is volatile and it will walk out through an open cup while you check your phone. In Gaelic the melissas fall under lus an eòin in some regions, though the naming wanders by glen. Drink it warm in the late afternoon, when the day's adrenaline starts eating its own tail. This is the plant for the nerve that keeps firing after the danger has passed — the one that has you rehearsing an argument at four in the morning with somebody who is asleep and doesn't know you're fighting. What do you reach for when your body won't stand down? I’m building an archive of women, trans, non-binary, and intersex folks deeply connected to the plant world 🌿 (botanists, herbalists, artists, researchers, foragers...). I want to celebrate both hidden histories and present-day creators 📜🔍. Who inspires you in this space? Drop your recommendations in the comments so we can grow this together! 🌳

Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium maculatum) But who is Joe Pye? It seems to be the anglophone name of a very interesting Mohican, Joseph Shauquethqueat, living at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Massachusetts and New York. Not clear he had anything to do with the plant, maybe only by association. A scholarly article about botany, history and First Nations, with Latin names and a critical eye.
